A useful training log captures exercise, load, reps, sets, effort, rest, symptoms, and one recovery note. It should make the next decision easier: repeat the load, add a rep, add a small amount of weight, change the exercise, or reduce fatigue.

  • After training: add one short note on technique, pain, or unusual fatigue.

The minimum useful training log

Record the exercise variation, total load, sets, reps, and effort. Add rest time when it changes performance, and note pain or technique changes when they matter. A line such as “bench press — 135 lb — 3 × 8 — RPE 8 — two-minute rests” is enough to guide the next session.

A simple session template

  • Exercise: include the variation, grip, machine, or bar when relevant.
  • Load: record total barbell weight and label pounds or kilograms.
  • Work: write each set and reps actually completed.
  • Effort: use RPE or repetitions in reserve consistently.
  • Rest: record it when short or long rest changes the result.
  • Note: one sentence on technique, symptoms, sleep, or setup.

How the log changes the next workout

If every set reached the top of the rep range with clean technique and the planned effort, add a small amount of load. If later sets missed reps because rest was short, repeat the load with normal rest. If a joint symptom increased, change range, load, or exercise before adding more. If several lifts are down together, look at fatigue and recovery rather than forcing progress on each lift.

Four-week example

A lifter records dumbbell bench press for three sets of 8–12. Week one is 50 lb per hand for 10, 9, and 8 reps at about RPE 8. Week two is 11, 10, and 9. Week three reaches 12, 11, and 10. Week four reaches 12 on all three sets with stable form, so the next session can use the next available dumbbell and return to the lower end of the range.

The log shows a real progression without requiring a one-rep max. It also shows whether the dumbbell jump is too large and whether adding reps first is the better choice.

Track recovery without creating a diary

Use a small set of signals: sleep quality, unusual soreness, body-weight trend when relevant, and whether warmups felt normal. A short note is enough. The goal is to identify patterns, not explain every good or bad rep.

Pain and symptom notes

Write the location, movement, and whether the symptom changed during or after the session. “Right elbow discomfort increased on straight-bar curls and remained higher that evening” is more useful than “arm hurt.” Repeated or worsening pain, numbness, weakness, swelling, or loss of function needs qualified care.

Weekly review

  1. Mark exercises that added reps or load with stable technique.
  2. Find lifts that stalled for two or more comparable sessions.
  3. Check whether rest, setup, sleep, or symptoms changed.
  4. Choose one adjustment for the next week.

Common mistakes

  • Recording planned weights instead of completed work.
  • Leaving out the bar weight or measurement unit.
  • Changing exercise names so the same movement looks unrelated.
  • Adding so many readiness scores that the log becomes hard to maintain.
  • Using a single poor workout as proof that the whole program failed.

A good log is brief enough to use during training and specific enough to answer what changes next. Consistency beats a complicated tracker that is abandoned after a week.
